Mesopotamia: the sky as omen
In ancient Mesopotamia, careful records of celestial events became part of a sophisticated omen tradition. Eclipses, planetary appearances and other events could be read as signs concerning kingdoms and rulers. This was not yet the familiar modern birth-chart system, but it supplied crucial astronomical observations and the idea that patterns in the sky carried meaning.
